Andre Braugher, Who Played Captain Holt in ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’, Passes Away
The two-time Primetime Emmy award-winning American actor was 61.
Andre Braugher, the beloved actor, has passed away at age 61. His publicist confirmed the actor’s death, revealing only that the cause of death was “due to a brief illness”. The news came swiftly and suddenly, shocking fans worldwide who, for decades, have loved the actor’s multifaceted performance and natural gravitas. As an actor whose career began in 1989 with war film Glory, Braugher rose to prominence for his character Detective Frank Pembleton in the American police drama TV series Homicide: Life on the Street, which ran for seven seasons from 1993 to 1999.
In 2009, Braugher also took on the part of Owen Thoreau Jr. in Men of a Certain Age, a comedy TV series surrounding three middle-aged best friends struggling to navigate their lives in their late forties. Men of a Certain Age ran for two seasons before it was cancelled by its production network. But most recently, Braugher stole the hearts of a new generation as the stern but lovable Captain Raymond Holt in the TV sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine from 2013 to 2021. With co-stars Andy Samberg, Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero and Joe Lo Truglio, Brooklyn Nine-Nine went on to take home the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy in 2014.
Braugher himself received his first Primetime Emmy Award in 1998, for his role in Homicide in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category. Then almost 10 years later, he took home the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for Thief, the crime thriller drama that starred Braugher as Nick Atwater, the leader of a heist crew.
Following the news of Braugher’s seemingly unforeseen death, long-time friends from the entertainment industry have taken the time to pay tribute to the iconic actor. Terry Crews, who played Terrance “Terry” Jeffords on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, was one of the first to share his condolences on Instagram. Marc Evan Jackson, who plays Kevin Cozner, Captain Holt’s husband on the same show, shared a photo of the duo taken on the set of the show and penned a short tribute as well. Braugher is survived by his Homicide co-star and wife of 32 years, Ami Brabson, as well as their three sons.
