Opera Gallery Celebrates 30 Years in Singapore with ‘The Collector 1994’
The exhibition is styled like an art collector’s home from the era, furnished with masterworks from Fernando Botero, Pablo Picasso, Pierre Soulages and more.
If you’re nostalgic for the vibrant 1990s, head on down to Opera Gallery and immerse yourself in the new masterworks exhibition, ‘The Collector 1994’. The showcase celebrates three decades since the gallery’s founding in Singapore during the titular year, and presents a selection of 20th century masterpieces staged in an art collector’s home typical of that bygone era.
The works of Modern and Contemporary masters like Fernando Botero, Pierre Soulages, Marc Chagall, Renee Magritte and more take pride of place alongside historically accurate furnishings and memorabilia — the VCR, electronic typewriter and palm pilot are total blasts from the past. There’s even a Picasso piece in the “bedroom”, the highlight of the exhibition. The scenography sets a more intimate and personal mood to experience the artworks, and underscores their indelible nature in the facing of changing trends.
“When I travelled to Singapore in 1994, it was with a suitcase full of works by French artists — many of them my contemporaries and friends,” said Gilles Dyan, Founder and Chairman of Opera Gallery Group. “Singapore is significant in Opera’s history as our first location, a risk that has been most rewarding.”
Check out ‘The Collector 1994’ at Opera Gallery Singapore from 20 September to 20 October.
