Don't Miss Your Chance to Catch HAMILTON Live in Singapore
The highly acclaimed Broadway show has had a strong showing in Singapore and will be leaving soon
It's no exaggeration to say that mega hit Broadway musical Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda was defining moment in pop culture, extending beyond just the realms of avid theatre-goers and broadway enthusiast and into mainstream media. So much so that it earned itself a record-breaking 16 nominations at the 70th Tony Awards, winning 11 of them, including Best Musical. Later, it went on to win a Pulitzer Prize in Drama in 2016. Hamilton became a cultural phenomenon that enraptured America and very soon after, the rest of the world.
The musical is based a biography by Ron Chernow about Alexander Hamilton, one of America's founding fathers and iconic historical figure. Written and performed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the draw of Hamilton lies in its fusion of rap, hip-hop, soul and traditional show tunes and using this funky amalgamation to tell a story. The story is a compelling one that draws from real-life historical events (mainly the American Revolutionary War), although Lin-Manuel Miranda does take some creative liberties for dramatic impact. So, while this might not be a history lesson, if you're looking for an incredible music filled night chockful of rap bars, Hamilton delivers with flying colours.
Currently, the International tour of Hamilton has made its stop in Singapore and will be playing through June 9, 2024. While Lin-Manuel Miranda might not be there, Australian actor Jason Arrow does a fantastic job filling the shoes of Alexander Hamilton, effortless riding each beat and showing amazing flow in all his delivery. It was also truly impressive how Arrow rapped and sang throughout the 170 minute duration, seemingly without catching a single breath and doing so effortlessly.
Equally impressive is Filipina singer and actress, Rachelle Ann Go's portrayal of Eliza, Hamilton's devoted and loving wife. Her strong yet crystal clear voice absolutely fills the theatre and her lovestruck, sweet number, "Helpless" added much needed contrast and variety to the mile-a-minute flows that fill a good portion of the show. American actor DeAundre’ Woods’ portrayal of Hamilton's friend-turned-rival, Aaron Burr, Brent Hill's cheeky and hilarious King George III and Darnell Abraham's commanding voice as George Washington also stood out in a cast filled with top notch talent. Their passionate performances leaving a mark on the audience and earning standing ovations.
While the original Broadway show might be available on Disney+, we can say without a doubt that Hamilton is something to be experienced, not watched. The raw emotions of the cast on stage, the choreography and set changes, all are just that much more impactful when the story is living and breathing in front of you.
Hamilton is now playing at the Marina Bay Sands, Sands Theatre till June 9 with 8pm shows on Tuesday to Friday, 2pm and 8pm shows on Saturday, 1pm and 6.30pm on Sunday. Tickets are priced at $80 to $300 and are available for booking here.
