Update:

The trailer for Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6 is finally here. Back in November, Rockstar Games initially announced that the trailer for the popular open-world game would be published on December 6, but following a leak containing footage from the trailer, the company decided to push up the official release.

The newly unveiled trailer, set in Vice City, GTA’s version of Miami, Florida offers us a first look at the female protagonist – Lucia – who starts her journey in prison. Lucia is GTA’s first female protagonist, and is joined by her lover and literal partner-in-crime. And, in classic Florida fashion, alligators take over, partygoers live it up on rooftops and the beaches of Vice City are swarming with NPCs. While Tom Petty’s ‘Love is a Long Road’ plays in the background, the trailer gives us glimpses into all the car-related crimes around the city.

Heists and hijacking aside, what’s interesting about GTA 6 is that it is set to take place in the modern era, versus the hyper-1980s visuals we are all familiar with from GTA Vice City. GTA 5 and 4 were both set in the early 2000s. Instagram lives, TikToks and more social media madness consume the wild city in GTA 6, hinting that gameplay could potentially move into real-world social media territory.

The trailer also finally confirmed when to expect the game: 2025. Since there has been no specific date tied to the launch of GTA 6, fans can only wait in anticipation for the popular series to hit the stores more than a year from now. However, what we do know is that GTA’s publisher Take-Two Interactive has confirmed that GTA 6 will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but a PC version has not been confirmed.

Original, November 17:

More than a decade after Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 5 was released, Rockstar Games, the video game company that owns the GTA franchise, announced back in February last year that it was working on the sixth instalment of the video game series. Earlier this month, Rockstar Games’ co-founder and president Sam Houser also published an official statement on the company’s Twitter account, confirming that the company would be sharing an official first trailer for the game “in early December”.

The announcement also accompanied news of the company’s 25th-anniversary celebrations taking place next month. The New York-based company first unveiled Grand Theft Auto to the world in 1997, and the game was an instant bestseller, easily becoming one of the most iconic video games to date. Over the 26 years since its release, the game series has sold more than 405 million units worldwide. GTA 5, which dropped in 2013, is the second best-selling video game of all time, trailing only behind Minecraft.

Fans were unexpectedly given an early insight into GTA 6 last year in September when some assets of the video game circulated online. The leak contained almost 100 videos and stills of the game in Vice City, albeit in the early stages of production. The unforeseen leak was confirmed by Rockstar Games shortly after, stating, “We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way. We will update everyone again soon and, of course, will properly introduce you to this next game when it's ready.”

GTA 5, even ten years on, is hailed for its sharp graphics and playing style. The series is well-known amongst gamers for introducing innovative, ground-breaking technologies with each launch. Perhaps, this is why Rockstar Games has yet to officially make GTA 6 public to fans. After all, Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive, has shared that every new addition to the famed series “needs to be something you've never seen before”. The company has also been committing time to the development of Grand Theft Auto Online, the multiplayer online version of the game, available to play on PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
