For as long as anybody can remember, the moon’s faraway surface has piqued their interest. When it first debuted, the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 series included mostly black-toned timepieces made of ceramic, which was preferred over other materials because of its lightweight quality and resistance to scratches. Celebrating the mission’s half-century milestone, the brand has reverted to its roots in watchmaking, improving upon the original design with an extra dose of excellent craftsmanship.
This new model for 2024 from Omega, officially named the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8, has all the essential specs you might want. Featuring a laser-ablated moon relief on the blackened main plate and bridges, the watch's Calibre 3869 pronounces the definition of the moon. The dial side reflects our view of the lunar surface from Earth while the back of the watch reveals the dark side that only astronauts get to see.
Black anodised aluminium forms the watch’s skeletonised dial which neatly showcases the moon-decorated mechanism. Separate pieces of black ceramic were utilised by OMEGA to create the 44.25 mm case with alternating brushed and polished components, the polished bezel, and the case back which reveals the “WE’LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE” script, whereas the tachymeter scale is filled with bright white “Grand Feu” enamel for that pop of colour.
And the awesomeness doesn’t end there. This watch is sure to make certain die-hard Speedmaster fans and collectors ecstatic. The patent-pending small-seconds hand, located at 9 o’clock, is fashioned from Grade 5 Titanium and resembles NASA’s renowned Saturn V rocket construction.
