In celebration of the Japanese sports label's 75th anniversary, Onitsuka Tiger has announced a global collaboration with iconic Japanese pop icon, ASTRO BOY.
Onitsuka Tiger, since its inception has been an itegral part of the streetwear scene, blending sports and street style seamlessly for years. Founded in 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka, the Japanese streetwear label is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2024 and to mark this momentous occasion, Onitsuka has announced a capsule collection in collabration with another Japanese icon, ASTRO BOY.
Even for those who are unfamilar with the world of anime, you have probably seen the manga and anime series' spiky-haired robot protagonist and his signature red boots. The series by Osamu Tezuka (affectionately dubbed as the "God of Manga" by many) became the first full-length anime TV series to air in Japan in 1963 and paved the way for anime as we know it today. At the height of the series' popularity, Astro Boy was viewed by 40% of the Japanese population with access to a television and was also the first anime to be brought overseas to the US in the 1960s. On a similar vein, since its inception, Onitsuka Tiger was also the first to release true athletic shoes that are made in Japan.
