Your First Look at Onitsuka Tiger's 75th Anniversary Collaboration with ASTRO BOY

In celebration of the Japanese sports label's 75th anniversary, Onitsuka Tiger has announced a global collaboration with iconic Japanese pop icon, ASTRO BOY.

Onitsuka Tiger, since its inception has been an itegral part of the streetwear scene, blending sports and street style seamlessly for years. Founded in 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka, the Japanese streetwear label is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2024 and to mark this momentous occasion, Onitsuka has announced a capsule collection in collabration with another Japanese icon, ASTRO BOY

Even for those who are unfamilar with the world of anime, you have probably seen the manga and anime series' spiky-haired robot protagonist and his signature red boots. The series by Osamu Tezuka (affectionately dubbed as the "God of Manga" by many) became the first full-length anime TV series to air in Japan in 1963 and paved the way for anime as we know it today. At the height of the series' popularity, Astro Boy was viewed by 40% of the Japanese population with access to a television and was also the first anime to be brought overseas to the US in the 1960s. On a similar vein, since its inception, Onitsuka Tiger was also the first to release true athletic shoes that are made in Japan. 

The capsule collection consists of 43 pieces for both men and women, spanning across skirts, track suits, pants, accessories and more. Speaking of accessories, a special edition of the MEXICO 66SD and DENTIGREPuff Boot makes its debut with the collection and will come delivered in a limited edition box and shopping bag.

Marking this epic collaboration of two prolific names in Japanese pop and fashion culture, Onitsuka Tiger has announced a special Ginza Pop-up store where you can take a look at the capsule collection first hand. The store opened its doors to the public on December 12 and features the Japanese label's first ever café called "TORA CAFÉ 75", located on the second floor of the pop-up. The café offers a collaborative menu with famous Japanese shave iced store, HOSEKIBAKO, where visitors five exclusive and original shaved ice flavours made of selected seasonal ingredients. 

Meanwhile, on the first floor, visitors can also learn more about Onitsuka Tiger's history with over a hundred variations of the iconic MEXICO 66™ sneakers on display, including rare archival pieces from previous collections. Uma Thurman famously sported a pair in the Quentin Taratino classic "Kill Bill", cementing its status in the pop culture scene. The store also provides embroidery services on any MEXICO 66™ purchases there so you can freely customise your pair with alphabets, numbers and symbols.
